Maori name: Aotearoa (pronounced ‘Aow-tea-row-a’) is the Maori name for the country of New Zealand. The literal translation of Aotearoa is « land of the long white cloud ».

What time of year is best to visit New Zealand?

The New Zealand summer stretches from 1 December until the end of February each year. The great Kiwi Summer is truly an experience not to be missed. New Zealand boasts a subtropical climate with temperatures between 20-30 degrees (68 – 86 degrees fahrenheit). The days are long and sunny and the nights quite pleasant and mild, perfect for bedding down in your motorhome rental on the shores of a great lake or perhaps near a Coromandel ocean beach.

During the summer time New Zealand’s roads are generally busy with people making their way to popular holiday spots all over the countryside (most popular of course are the stunning beaches on the coastline of New Zealand). A feature of the great Kiwi Summer are families from all over the country making their way by car, motorcycle, truck, trailer and, of course, rental motorhomes, to their place of rest and recreation for 2+ glorious weeks. It’s most certainly about the journey, making your way across dairy cow filled plains and through winding gorges to reconnect with friends and family.

So when operating your rental camper on a pilgrimage of your own, be absolutely safe, be mindful when driving your hired NZ Motorhome Rentals campervan and remember New Zealanders’ drive on the right hand side of the road (NZ Motorhome Rentals pro-tip: the centre of the road should always be on the immediate right-hand side of the driver). Use your mirrors to check behind your motorhome regularly and if traffic is building up behind you, pull over as soon as it is safe to do so and let the traffic pass. A chorus of happy horns from other motorists thanking you will be music to your ears!

Northland Campervan Haven

New Zealand’s upper North Island offers a number of spectacular locations for the hire motorhome powered explorers amongst us. We’ve crafted our sample Northland itinerary and recommendations to suit a relatively short and sweet timeline.

Day 1 — Auckland Arrival Options

Upon arrival to Auckland, pick up your NZ Motorhome Rentals campervan from the airport. We offer flexible pick up and drop off options with most fleets making their rental campervans available for pickup close to the arrivals terminal at Auckland International Airport. Auckland is a beautiful spot to set up shop in your rental motorhome on your first day in New Zealand if you so choose. There are a multitude of inner city beaches to choose from, restaurants, bars and parks to enjoy the atmosphere of New Zealand’s most populous centre.

We recommend a visit to Devonport, a harbourside suburb of Auckland. In Devonport you’ll find a character filled suburb with restaurants, cafes and antique shops. The crown jewel is a visit to North Head, a location of military strategic importance during a scare in the mid-1880’s and during the second World War. The emplacements built into the hillside and 360 degree views of the harbour are truly spectacular. Fish & chips at sunset with a stunning view before retiring for the evening to your hire campervan – what more could you ask for.

Pilot your rental campervan North from Auckland Airport to visit the iconic Bay of Islands. The journey is approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles) and will take you roughly 3.5 hours (there are optional routes to take your motorhome to avoid toll roads if you prefer).

Day 2 - Bay of Islands

Upon arrival with your hire motorhome in the Bay of Islands, soak up the magnificent sea views in Russell and Paihia. The Bay of Islands is a popular spot amongst Kiwis and is a favourite for the beautiful beaches and adrenaline inducing sport fishing. A heritage location, you’ll find the Bay of Islands to contain all manner of exciting sites of historical significance perfect for exploring with your rental motorhome.

From Russell and Paihia, you can make your way to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and to Government House to take in some of New Zealand’s rich history and cultural roots. The Bay of Islands features incredible sites for exploration of the ocean and bounty within. Diving and water sports are popular attractions for people visiting the Bay.

Day 3 - Ahipara

On your third day in your motorhome rental head to the Northern tip of the North Island – Cape Reinga, Te Rerenga Wairua. The Cape is located more than 100km (62 miles) north of Kaitaia – be sure to pack enough food for your adventures today. The Cape is a location of great spiritual significance to the Maori people and is believed to be the place where spirits enter the underworld.

The beauty of the Cape is not limited to the spiritual significance. At the Cape, the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet with cataclysmic force; a battle that’s been raging for millenia. Cape Reinga is a must on your hire campervan experience. So beautiful is the Cape, it’s UNESCO accredited status as a World Heritage Site is presently pending. There are a number of camping sites located in the area to park up your motorhome rental following your adventures.

Day 4 - Waipoua

From Ahipara make your way South to the Waipoua Forest on the upper West Coast – the single largest native forest zone in Northland. Waipoua houses the mighty Kauri tree and two of the largest Kauri in New Zealand named Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere. To get a sense of scale, Tane Mahuta is around 2,000 years old – Tane has a diameter of approximately 4.4 meters and the nearest branch is 18 meters from ground level.

In 1952 the forest was given sanctuary status and is a true gem of the North Island. When travelling and exploring the area be sure to take only photos and leave only footprints. There are a number of campsites in the area to park your motorhome rental overnight.

Day 5 - Mangawhai

From the forest to the beach, head south in your hire campervan to Mangawhai where you’ll find breathtaking white sand beaches, spectacular surf, golf and beautifully conserved beach land teeming with bird life. Mangawhai is situated 150km (93 miles) south of Waipoua and will take you around 2.5 hours to reach in your campervan. The beach is a great way to wind down from the whirlwind motorhome trip over the last few days. In Mangawhai you’ll get a taste of the true Kiwi summer experience.

Day 6 - Auckland

And with that, it’s time to head home. Mangawhai is roughly 120km (74 miles) from Auckland and will take you approximately 2 hours to reach. We recommend allowing sufficient time to return your rental motorhome and to account for any unexpected traffic (our top tip would be to avoid the school holiday time if you can). Upon arrival in Auckland you’ll be best placed to enjoy the city prior to departing for your next adventure.

Hiring a motorhome is one of the best ways to explore Northland’s many small towns, discovering many hidden gems along the way. Take your motorhome off the beaten track and discover what a kiwi adventure is all about. Grab a spot at one of the many well equipped motor camps located all over Northland and bed down for beautiful evenings in stunning Kiwi Northland. We’re excited to hear how your adventure went!

Taranaki Motorhome

Make the most of the sights that the North Island has to offer, rent your motorhome and travel from Auckland south to the inner North Island’s National Park home to three beautiful dormant volcanoes. Take a day (or three if you are up to it!) and undertake one of New Zealand’s great walks, the Tongariro Crossing, not only a natural wonder but also a site from the filming of the Lord of the Rings (spot Mt Ngauruhoe playing the role of the infamous Mt Doom in the Lord of the Rings films). The National Army Museum Waiouru is situated only a short drive from the National Park and Lake Taupo. Enjoy the serene landscape from the window of your motorhome driving along the desert road.

Following an exploration of the central North Island, make your way West toward New Zealand’s most perfectly formed dormant volcano cone, Mt Taranaki, in the Egmont National Park. Camp in your motorhome at the base of the volcano and hike to the summit for magnificent views of the west coast and central North Island. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous you might like to head further east to Rotorua to explore world class mountain biking tracks, Maori cultural experiences and see the geothermal activity present all over the city. The Pohutu geyser is a must see and erupts once or twice every hour shooting steaming hot water over thirty meters into the air!

Auckland to Wellington Camper Odyssey

A rental motorhome adventure from Auckland to Wellington with NZ Motorhome Rentals is a great way to explore the central avenue of the North Island (we recommend of course heading Northward first – see our trip guide above for an exciting recommended route). Auckland is approximately 640km (398 miles) North of Wellington by road.

The road south contains a rich mixture of New Zealand history and stunning landscapes with many motorhome friendly campgrounds fully equipped with all the on-road comforts. Explore and enjoy all that the central North Island has to offer on your way to (windy) Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city and a bustling cultural metropolis.

Day 1 - South to Matamata

The 150km (93 miles) 2 hour route from Auckland to Matamata is a scenic greenscape of the upper central North Island and will take approximately 2 hours in your rental motorhome. With a plethora of small towns to explore, take your time as you pilot your motorhome southward toward Hobbiton. Matamata’s central attraction is the Hobbiton village. The film location of the Shire from the Lord of the Rings trilogy filmed in New Zealand (and the best films ever made if you ask our staff). Book your place on a guided tour of Hobbiton well in advance to guarantee your place (Hobbiton is exceptionally popular so booking is essential). Make sure you keep your camera charged!

Day 2 - Matamata to Rotorua

Following an exciting day in the farming heartland of the North Island, it’s time to head to the adventure and geothermal wonderland of Rotorua in your rental motorhome. 1 hour from Matamata and a go-to destination for tourists in New Zealand, Rotorua has a wealth of activities from mountain biking in the redwood forest to enjoying geothermal pools. A highlight for the campervan initiated amongst us are the stunning Blue Lake (known as Tikitapu in Maori) in the area. Be sure to check the status of the lakes before diving in, the Green Lake (Rotokākahi) situated right next to the blue lake is off limits to everyone as the lake has been declared Tapu (sacred) by the Maori people. We recommend visiting Huka Falls – New Zealand’s answer to Niagra!

Day 3 - Rotorua to Taupo

Departing Rotorua, drive your motorhome the 80km (50 miles) 1 hour south on to Taupo. Featuring a large blue lake formed following the Oruanui eruption some 26,000 years ago. From the lake flows the mighty Waikato river that winds it’s up north, through Hamilton, and out to the ocean at Port Waikato. Taupo is a hub for adventure and features everything from skydiving to fishing on the blue waters of the lake. Taupo is also a short drive in your rental campervan from the National Park one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, The Tongariro Crossing which is well worth taking the time to explore.

Day 4 - Taupo to Palmerston North

You’re nearly in Wellington and you’ve been soaking up all there is to see on the way there. This segment is one of, if not the most scenic, as you travel through the mountains and down the Desert Road. We recommend parking up the rental motorhome at the Waiouru Army Museum and meandering your way down the country seeing all there is to see. You may wish to stop and spend a little extra time in the area or simply enjoy the scenery as you pass through in your rental motorhome en route to Wellington.

Day 5 - Palmerston North to Wellington

The final leg of your motorhome based trip is the 2 hour, 140km (86 mile) route into Wellington. Passing through along the rugged coast line, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stretch out the drive time and to enjoy all the journey has to offer. Kapiti Island along the Kapiti Coast is a highlight and certainly worth stopping for – with sandy beaches and opportunities to walk, bike and explore the coast on horseback. Upon arrival in Wellington, we recommend a visit to Te Papa museum featuring a multitude of eye-catching exhibits (featuring Gallipoli, Te Taiao – Nature and a range of other art installations worth checking out). You can’t beat Wellington on a good day with stunning waterfront cafes, funky side streets (check out the cafe culture on Cuba Street) and the electric bar and nightclub scene – Wellington truly has something for everyone.

The motorhome fleets available via NZ Motorhome Rentals offer the means for a stunning drive down through the National Park to Wellington, seeing town after town and exploring all the best NZ has on offer. We recommend taking your time travelling in your motorhome to the capital city – it’s all about making memories with your friends, family and loved ones!
