Day two

Get out into nature and hike some of New Zealand’s most incredible nature scapes. Queenstown is central to many of New Zealand’s fabled great walks and the perfect location to explore the region in depth. Head from location to location on your own schedule by hiring your very own motorhome. If you’re pressed for time, the walk to the Routeburn Falls Hut is a great option. With the track entrance located only 45 minutes from central Queenstown in Glenorchy, the track is only 4 – 5 hours (roughly 9km) return. We recommend seeking additional guidance from iSite and the Department of Conservation for any weather warning and detailed track information and updates. Be sure to pack a lunch, plenty of water and several hours of daylight before heading back to your campervan to hire a spot at a near by camp ground to rest for the night in Queenstown.

With a rich history rooted in gold mining, Arrowtown is close to a number of golf courses, the stunning Lake Hayes, and features many restaurants and cafes. Autumn Festival in Arrowtown is a high point of the year as the leaves of trees that line the streets turn from green to a rich gold heralding the onset of Winterfest in Queenstown.  We recommend a New Zealand wide escape in your motorhome with a pick up and drop off the length of the country, from Auckland through to the bottom of the South Island.

        Events and attractions:

        #1 Lake Wakatipu

Lake Wakatipu is an inland lake stretching 80 kilometres (50 miles) in length. The visually spectacular Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand’s longest and third largest lake. Famous for its epic vistas, the Queenstown’s local and tourist population soak up the sights from the multitude of walking and cycling tracks that meander along the lake’s pristine shores.

#2 Bob’s Peak and Skyline Gondola

Bob’s Peak is the place to visit if you want to see the most stunning panoramic views around Queenstown. Making your way to the highest point is as easy as going on a self-guided trek (locally known as the Tiki Trail) or travelling up the Skyline Gondola. Whatever route you opt to take, rest assured that you’ll be in drivers seat for the view of a life time over the breathtaking landscapes that Queenstown is famous for.

        #3 The Remarkables

Situated on Lake Wakatipu’s southeastern shores, the Remarkables mountain range abruptly reaches sharply up into the (often) blue skies creating a beautiful backdrop along the waters. The Remarkables are also famous for their skiing and snowboarding quality!

        #4 Queenstown Gardens

The tranquil Queenstown Gardens are situated at the heart of town and are well worth a visit on your motorhome adventure. Offering sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown’s surroundings, the gardens are a great place to relax and wander from your campervan.

        #5 Skippers Canyon

Skippers Canyon is a historic and visually stunning gorge that stretches over 22 kilometres (13.7 miles). The canyon is accessible via Queenstown along the road that leads to Coronet Peak Ski Field. Skippers Canyon is a popular stopover for heritage cruises, jet boating and bungee jumping.

        #6 Shotover River

The Shotover River is a favourite among calm and thrill-seekers alike – the rapids and fast current make the river one of the most spectacular places for jet boating and white water rafting. The Shotover River is over 75 kilometres (47 miles) long and flows south of the Southern Alps through to the Kawarau River.

        #7 Nevis Valley

Famous for housing the world’s biggest rope swing, the Nevis Valley is one of Queenstown’s most iconic adventure sights. The Nevis Bungy platform is also the third highest in the world, coming in at 134 metres (439.6 feet). The valley is slightly off the beaten track, and can only be accessed via a shuttle service that departs from downtown.

        #8 Marine Parade

Marine Parade comprises the idyllic Queenstown Beach, the iconic Bathhouse Café, and the solemn Queenstown Fallen Soldiers Memorial. There is a pathway connecting it to the Queenstown Gardens, and locals love to spend some time exploring it during the summer months. Marine Parade is also the place to catch local events like the annual Winter Festival’s opening night fireworks and New Years’ celebrations.

        #9 The Kawarau River

The Kawarau River drains Lake Wakatipu, flowing 60 kilometres (37 miles) eastward to Kawarau Gorge. Rapid currents and narrow stretches turned this river into a prime spot for riverboarding, jet boating, white water rafting and river surfing. The Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is also renowned for being the birthplace of commercial bungee jumping.

        #10 Gibbston Valley Winery

Gibbston Valley is one of the closest wineries to Queenstown. Its vineyards are perched up the rugged schist mountains near Kawarau Gorge. High altitudes and diversified climatic conditions allow Gibbston Valley to cultivate the Pinot Noir varietals the Central Otago region is famous for.

        ‘Tāhuna’ – Maori for ‘Queenstown’

In Māori, « Tāhuna » typically refers to a sandbank, beach, or shore. It is associated with a location where land meets water, such as a coastal area or the edge of a lake or river. In the context of Queenstown, Tāhuna could be interpreted as a reference to the town’s proximity to Lake Wakatipu, which is a prominent feature of the region. The name Tāhuna acknowledges the geographical and cultural significance of the area’s lakeside location.
