Campervan driving in New Zealand – tips and tricks

The warmer summer months in New Zealand from December through until February/March are generally the busiest time on New Zealand roads and when the most care must be taken when traveling from place to place. Motorhome hire can be challenging during the Kiwi summer due to popularity, however, NZ Motorhome Rentals pulls together the most up to date camper availability and price data for our customers to review.

NZ Motorhome Rentals recommends keeping the following steps in mind whilst out on the roads in New Zealand enjoying your RV rental vacation:

  • Review the New Zealand road code: the road code sets out the clear expectations for users sharing the road in New Zealand to ensure the safety of your friends and whanau (whanau, pronounced ‘pha-no’, meaning family in Maori);
  • Stick to the left hand side of the road (the center line should always be to the right side of the motorhome driver) and, of course, always wear your seatbelts whilst operating your motorhome rental;
  • Take it easy: reduce the pace and sense of urgency when traveling in your RV from place and place. Make sure you actively monitor your speed, there is a zero tolerance approach to excessive speed and endangering other road users in New Zealand;
  • Look for and drive in accordance with recommended speed indicators: corners in New Zealand roads feature large reflective recommended speed signs setting out the speed rating for the particular corner, remember you’re operating a larger vehicle so stick to the recommended speeds and keep your family and friends safe;
  • Use your mirrors to see what’s going on behind you: if you notice a number of cars starting to build up behind your campervan as you weave on often turn heavy NZ roads then find the next safest spot to pull over and let all of the traffic pass, you’ll make everyone’s day!

If you require additional information whilst in New Zealand and prefer speaking to a human then there are over 100 iSite information centres located all over New Zealand. Simply drop into one of these centres and the friendly knowledgeable staff will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have regarding road use or New Zealand in general.

Auckland – Tāmaki Makaurau

Auckland is the gateway to the rest of New Zealand with over 3.2 million international visitors arriving in Auckland every year (this number reflects pre-pandemic conditions – we look forward to welcoming our international guests to enjoy motorhome travel as soon as permitted). The Maori name, Tāmaki Makaurau, means Tāmaki of a hundred lovers. The Auckland region is steeped in history and has become a true cosmopolitan melting pot with many nationalities represented across the city.

Auckland is home to a number of landmarks and institutions. The University of Auckland (circa. 1883) has a campus spread throughout the city itself with a number of architecturally significant buildings. Auckland’s largest tourist attractions include sites of historical significance, performance art, music and cultural festivals, sporting events from a number of codes, as well as the imagination capturing MOTAT – the Museum of Transport and Technology, the Auckland War Memorial Museum, and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Auckland is architecturally marked by the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the 328 meter tall Sky Tower – the tallest Southern Hemisphere structure with a viewing platform at the top that looks out 360 degrees over Auckland.

There are numerous options for the Auckland intrepid campervan renter. With NZ Motorhome Rentals, hire your motorhome and drive it across the country from Auckland. Explore the stunning Waitakere Ranges and sample delicious locally handcrafted cheeses and wine at the Puhoi Valley Cheese Shop. Explore the rugged West Coast beaches that skirt the upper North Island’s coastline, for the surfers there are a number of breaks located all along the West Coast. It’s vitally important to note that the Tasman Sea which batters the West Coast of New Zealand is unforgiving. Be sure to assess the conditions, wear appropriate swimwear and don’t push your limits.

Flexible RV pick up options include depots at both Auckland airport and in the heart of the Central Business District – we make it easy for you to craft your hire camper based vacation. Survival in the city of Auckland is a breeze. There are several well equipped motor camps to park your rental campervan in for the night (some of which you may find are available for free).

Activity Ideas

A basic Auckland itinerary might include, heading out in the morning to Auckland War Memorial Museum and explore the many wonders of the natural world with many of New Zealand’s own wonders – like the giant (and now extinct) Moa, a bird over three meters in height that once roamed New Zealand’s native bush land. The Auckland War Memorial Museum is the foundation of a spectacular afternoon with family and friends, as well as detailed exhibitions delving into Maori culture and the development of the modern world. Learn, engage and wander the domain filled with native bush and wild-life.

 One Tree Hill and Mt Eden feature a number of cosy cafes as well as beautiful spots to watch the sun set over Auckland’s magnificent cityscape. Take a picnic lunch or dinner and seat yourself at the top of the hill, driving is an option with a small car park at the top of the hill. You may wish to explore the Wallace Arts Centre which contains some New Zealand’s, and the world’s, most iconic modern art pieces. Situated in the heart of the city, these activities set the scene for a beautiful day.

Auckland is the perfect location to launch your New Zealand camper hire holiday. With pick up from both the inner city of Auckland and of course Auckland Airport, there is no shortage of options to ensure things roll the way you want them to. Auckland is also very close to the likes of Hamilton, Taupo and Tauranga. From Auckland you can make your way all over the North Island in your motorhome or head to New Zealand’s deep southern cities of Dunedin and Christchurch to soak up the fresh mountain air from the comfort of your motorhome. We recommend heading to Greymouth for an authentic Southern experience, with genuine and friendly locals as well as stunning sights to see. NZ Motorhome Rentals offers plenty of cheap deals on the latest campervans – so jump in, search, book and save with us.

Auckland Campervan Rental Sample Itinerary – Explore the Auckland Region

North Shore Expedition

Auckland’s North Shore is a large urban area located across the Waitemata Harbour from the Central Business District of Auckland. The North Shore is home to many golden sandy beaches and is one of Auckland’s most in demand locations. Over the bridge and down a short stretch of motorway, you’ll find places to park up your rental motorhome, a healthy restaurant and cafe culture as well as a stunning coastline to explore. At NZ Motorhome Rentals, the Shore is a favourite destination and we recommend making your way to some or all of the following places.

Takapuna: Head over to Takapuna and choose from a number of cosy cafes to start your day. Hurstmere Road is where you’ll find something to your taste (we recommend parking your hire campervan on one of the surrounding streets). For the fans of peace and quiet, Milford is right next door. Milford is a relaxed beach suburb on Lake Pupuke – popular with the locals of many water sports, especially rowing. We recommend soaking up all the coastline has to offer on the Milford to Takapuna track that winds its way right along the seaside.

Devonport: Devonport has a remarkable and long kiwi history and is still home to a New Zealand Naval base. From the Ferry Building, Devonport is a mere 15 minute ride across the water from Auckland’s CBD for those leaving their rental motorhomes in the city. In Devonport are a number of wonderful cafes and restaurants to enjoy.

North Head: A real gem is North Head – a dormant volcano and former military hub during the Second World War. There are many tunnels and former gun emplacements to explore and an incredible 360 degree view of the Harbour and city. A truly special spot to enjoy a fish and chip dinner with family and friends.We also recommend stocking your RV with a couple sheets of cardboard. Use these as sleds to slide down the long grass verges that grow on the steeper slopes of North Head.

Albany, Long Bay & Birkenhead: Albany features a large mall with shopping, food and a cinema for a rainy day when you’re keen to escape the confines of your hire campervan during your stay. North Harbour Stadium is situated in the heart of Albany and is a prime location for football, Rugby Union and Rugby League matches taking place year round. Birkenhead features stunning ocean views from the top of every street in the area and is the perfect place from which to view Rangitoto Island.

Waiheke Island Wonders

Spend the day (or perhaps 2 or 3 days) on the stunning Waiheke Island. Waiheke is the second largest island in the Hauraki Gulf. Waiheke is approximately 45-60 minutes from Auckland by ferry (if you’re planning on driving your rental campervan over to Waiheke, we recommend using our friends at Sealink – pricing is available on request). Ferries leave frequently from the inner city Ferry Terminal building and head directly to the island. A number of campsites are present on the island suitable for rental motorhome parking with shower, power and toilet facilities. Once on Waiheke you have the option of making your way about on public transport or hiring a bike to conduct your own two wheeled tour.

As for wholesome activities on the Island, the highlights on Waiheke are the white sand beaches. Little Oneroa Beach, is a beautiful secluded beach located down the east end of Oneroa Beach. Down Little Oneroa you’ll find a playground for the children and free to use BBQs. Perfect for an evening by the beach. Waiheke is also home to a small cinema and, being home to a number of artists, often features performances from talented musicians.

Waiheke is home to many culinary delights at one of the island’s many vineyards, known in New Zealand as the Island of Wine. The climate favours the growth of Bordeaux style grapes and has resulted in a number of awards being won for the quality of the red wine produced. An afternoon of wine tasting and delicious food is easily organised with the island featuring Cablebay, Mudbrick, Kenny Point and Te Wahu vineyards. Guided tours around the island are also available. It goes without saying, do not drink and drive your rental motorhome.

Rugged West Coast Beaches

45 minutes from central Auckland is the wild West Coast featuring a number of beautiful black sand beaches well worth exploring during your time in Auckland. For the surfers in your party, Bethells Beach, Piha, and Muriwai are home to some of the best breaks within an hour of the city. See the great Albatross perched high above the ocean on rugged cliff tops and the resident Gannet colony enjoying the view from a rocky outcrop.

Slightly further down the coast from Piha is Karekare Beach. A blacksand beach popular with filmmakers – the dramatic landscape and rocky outcrops that lead directly to the sea make for stunning photographs. For those rental motorhome drivers heading further South, Karioitahi Beach is a popular destination. A rugged blacksand beach popular for cycling, horse riding, windsurfing and Blokarts (wind powered carts) that present a great opportunity for fun.

North of Karioitahi is the Awhitu Peninsula – a stunning and tranquil park featuring hiking tracks and flat beach land. A short walk over the farmland leads to panoramic views out over the Manukau Harbour toward Auckland. We recommend a walk to the Peninsula’s end where you’ll find an iconic lighthouse. Campsites are available to park your motorhome rental at – be sure to check the websites of local authorities for more information.

Always take care when entering the water – not all of these beaches are manned by surf life guards all year round (some have no lifeguard service at all). The ocean is dangerous, make sure you swim with a buddy, tell someone where you are going and monitor the conditions – if in doubt, we stress that you should not go out. Take the motorhome rental to a nice spot and enjoy the ocean view.

Maori Name

The Māori name for Auckland is Tāmaki (pronounced ‘ta-mah-key’). Among the many versions is Tāmaki-makau-rau (Tāmaki of a hundred lovers), referring to the desirable, fertile site at the hub of a network of waterways taking travellers north, south, east or west. For centuries different groups of people flourished, cohabited and displaced each other in turn in the Auckland region.

One Tree Hill is a 182-metre (597-foot) volcano which serves as an important memorial place for Māori and other New Zealanders. The island is a popular hiking destination as well as being a much-adored spot for kayakers and boaties.
