Hamilton is at the heart of the Waikato King Country in New Zealand, the rural heartland of the North Island famous for producing the Kiwi staples milk, beef and lamb. Hamilton is very much on the rise with continued development in the city and acts as an exceptional alternative to Auckland as a more relaxed start point for your New Zealand campervan hire adventure.
The Waikato river banks that weave their way through Hamilton city are easily accessible by car or bus from Auckland and other main centres in New Zealand. From Hamilton, you are in a great position to head in any direction in New Zealand’s North Island and to all of the beautiful and exciting places beyond.
We at NZ Motorhome Rentals are proud to be New Zealand’s premier motorhome rental price comparison site – just ask our loyal customers. We have been proudly assisting international and local explorers with their campervan adventures since 2002 – search 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6+ berth campervans and explore all that the mighty Waikato has to offer.
Motorhome Rental Hamilton
Hamilton, situated 2 hours south of Auckland, in the heart of the mighty Waikato Region, is affectionately referred to by Kiwi’s as the ‘City of the Future’ following a largely unsuccessful 80’s marketing campaign for the city by the then Mayor.
Years later the city of Hamilton has grown in leaps bounds, on the banks of the Waikato River, the city has formed its own identity built upon strong cultural roots, arts and music, craft beer and wine, some of New Zealand’s highest quality farm land, close proximity to the west and east coast Coromandel beaches, the winter ski and snowboard capital of New Zealand’s north island, Mt Ruapehu. And of course close proximity to Auckland.
As a heartland location, Hamilton is an exceptional place to begin your Kiwi Campervan hire adventure. We at New Zealand Motorhome Rentals can say with the utmost confidence you will enjoy your time, so come over, stay a while and enjoy everything Hamilton has to offer.
With an International airport only twenty minutes drive from the Hamilton Central Business District, there is near limitless flexibility for the pick up and return of your rental campervan from NZ Motorhome Rentals. Of course, using our booking widget, you have the freedom to select the option best for you, including pick up of your rented campervan from Hamilton International Airport and drop off of your hired motorhome from all of New Zealand’s main centres.

Itinerary ideas
The Waikato is home to a number of stunning art galleries, cafes, restaurants and bars and many family friendly spectacular day walks catering to all ages and fitness levels. So sit back, strap in and tour the greater Waikato and soak up all that the central north island of New Zealand has to offer in your rental motorhome.
We enable our customers to pick up their 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6+ berth campervan from all the major centres throughout the country. When visiting the Waikato and flying direct to Hamilton, we recommend picking up your motorhome from Hamilton International Airport (or from one of our supplier depots in the central city or from Auckland International Airport) and make your way into the city of Hamilton to view to beautiful and international award winning Hamilton Gardens.
The Waikato features a number of stunning day and overnight walks, the Department of Conservation has a strong list of recommended family friendly and more intrepid walks. If you develop the affinity for the Waikato that the locals possess and need a place to stay in your campervan, Hamilton features a number of fully equipped camp grounds to suit your every need. If you’re in Hamilton during the cooler winter months, the Balloons Over Waikato Festival is a must see with large coloured hot air balloons flying over the city.
Morrinsville
We suggest circumnavigating the Waikato in your campervan and spending each night in different towns to get a real feel for the area and all that the Waikato has to offer. We recommend that you head to Morrinsville to see the largest manmade fibre glass cow in the Southern Hemisphere – the Morrinsville Mega Cow (and several other fibre glass cows made and decorated by local artists scattered around the town).
Te Awamutu
After your Morrinsville odyssey, drive your rental motorhome from your base campground to Te Awamutu and spend your evening touring the various pubs and clubs that line the brightly lit town streets. Te Awamutu has a number of stunning attractions including (for the gardeners amongst your party) the Alphra Lavenders.
Mount pirongia
Park your NZ Motorhome Rentals campervan at the base of Mount Pirongia, a spectacular mountain centred in the heart of the Waikato region. There are several areas that are camper friendly (be aware that not all are fully equipped with power and facilities). Park up (and lock up) your campervan and begin your hike to the summit of Mount Pirongia – the hike to the summit will take approximately three hours and features some challenging terrain to be aware of. So if you are heading up the mountain make sure that the members of your group have sufficient fitness.
We recommend staying in the Department of Conversation hut at the top of the mountain and spending the night stargazing with almost zero light pollution – on a cloudless night you will need to ensure that you have a long list of wishes to make whilst you watch falling star after falling star! Wake up in the morning to a beautiful frosty morning in the winter and watch the sun rise through the fog over the farm fields below.
