The second most populated city in New Zealand with over 420,000 people living in the city’s urban areas. Wellington was even crowned the “coolest little capital” in 2013 by Lonely Planet.
With so much to do in the city of Wellington, we have included our top recommendations for you to enjoy on your campervan adventure. We assure you that this is just the tip of the ice burg of all that is available in the wonderful city of Wellington.
Visit the national museum
Down on the waterfront, in a particularly striking building, is New Zealand’s national museum Te Papa. Te Papa is filled with exhibits that speak to New Zealand’s rich sociological, biological and historical legacy. The museum is also recognised as a world leader for its visitor centric experiences. Te Papa is an active celebrator and educator of the Maori culture and an exceptional place to learn. The museum also features a number of regular temporary exhibit installations that serve to educate and excite.
Get yourself up to the top of Mount Victoria
Mount Victoria provides visitors with a 360 degree panoramic lookout over the entire city, the surrounding area and the harbour. The Mount Victoria Lookout will prove to be a favourite with the instagrammers in your group. Relax on the top of the hill and watch as aircraft flyover and land at the airport and see the ships and ferries arriving and departing. Mount Victoria is accessible by car (there is a road to the top), or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the greenery of the town belt. We recommend grabbing yourself some hot fish and chips and sitting up at the top of the hill to watch the sunset over the city of Wellington.
Get on board the historic cable car
The Cable Car serves as a Wellington staple. The Cable Car runs operates from Lambton Quay and makes its way up to Kelburn. There of course a lookout at the top, a Cable Car Museum, and Carter Observatory features the Space Place. Space Place is particularly good - there are a number of displays, a digital planetarium and telescopes to play with.
Visit sets from major motion pictures
The Wellington suburb of Miramar was completely transformed into film making magic land and sets the scene for a number of world famous movies. So get down and get a front row seat to the pure artistry and creativity that created a few of the world's best movies at the Weta Cave mini-museum, the foundation of special effects in New Zealand. We recommend The Lord of the Rings location tour - an incredible pairing with a tour of Hobbiton in Matamata in the heart of the Waikato for the real LOTR fans amongst you.
Wellington is home to the iconic Caketin stadium located on the waterfront in the heart of the city where you will find the home of the mighty Hurricanes rugby union team and the Wellington Phoenix football team. After your sporting adventures - head to Cuba Street the spiritual home of hipsters the world over, art folk and the vintage clothing capital of New Zealand. Cuba Street is home to the city’s most eclectic bars, shopping and cafes. And of course the freaking Bucket Fountain!
Itinerary ideas from NZ Motorhome Rentals - from Wellington to the beyond
Wellington is only 4 hours drive South of the internationally re nowned Tongariro National Park. The National Park is home to the trio of mountains including the very skiable Mount Ruapehu. New in 2019 is the Sky Waka - a gondola taking passengers up the hill in a matter of minutes to see the spectacular views over the North Island from well over 3500 metres above sea level. The National Park is a particularly beautiful place to visit in every season. Mount Ruapehu is considered to be an active volcano - however, is very well monitored. People from all over the globe come to trek the fabled Tongariro Crossing where you move from desert like tundra to harsh volcanic rock all in the shadow of Mount Ngauruhoe (this mountain played a starring role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as Mount Doom). The snow park is incredible in the winter up until the middle of spring!
Approximately one hours drive from Wellington in your campervan rental you will arrive in Martinborough one of the most spectacular centres in New Zealand is famous for its viticulture. Martinborough features over 30 prominent vineyards and is a key destination on the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail. The Trail is set from Napier on the East Coast of the North Island through to Blenheim at the top of the South Island and has a 5 day duration.
A particularly beautiful spot is the Rimutaka Forest Park. A sub-two hour drive in your motorhome rental from central Wellington, the Forest is a must-visit destination to get your trekking and walking fix in nature at its finest in the heart of New Zealand. All ability levels and schedules are catered for in the forest with a well crafted network of trails of all kinds.
We at NZ Motorhome Rentals have a real soft spot for Taupo. The lakeside city has grown in leaps and bounds over the last to decades to become an adventure capital in the North Island. Featuring the likes of the Huka Falls, the Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park, Taupo is popular with adventure hungry and sport lovers in your party - with world class fly fishing all over the area. Taupo is located a slightly longer 5 hour drive from Wellington northward. Not all bad though, perhaps the lengthy drive justifies a longer stay in the central North Island (see our Taupo location page for some tops trip itinerary ideas).
The South Island is easily accessible via a trip on the Interislander ferry. A hot favourite with motorhome renters the top of the South Island gets the highest sunshine hours in all of New Zealand. There you will find the Abel Tasman National Park. The Abel Tasman not only features an incredible multi-day hike regarded as one of the great walks but also serves as a prime location to stay long-term in a motorhome. Featuring long stretches of white-sandy beach, trampinging tracks that run deep through the forest, and opportunities to explore the area by boat there is plenty to see by motorhome rental from Wellington. Also a little more than a stones throw away is Christchurch - a great location to pick up or drop off your campervan and enjoy all that the South Island has to offer.
