Motorhome Rental Greymouth
Greymouth is located on the West Coast of the South Island approximately 3 hours drive from Christchurch or alternatively enjoy a 4.5 hour scenic train ride on the Tranz Alpine from Christchurch through the hills (quite literally – there are heaps of tunnels), alongside pristine rivers and across wide open plains under the shadow of enormous snow capped mountains. There are many ways to reach this beautiful place but we, of course, have a soft spot for taking a motorhome rental.
Greymouth was once the location of the Maori Pa Mawhera (which translates to ‘wide spread river mouth’, referencing the river mouth that the town is located on the edge of). Greymouth is a treasured town and is affectionately considered to be the beating heart of the West Coast. Along with a rich gold mining history, the local brewery Monteith’s is a New Zealand institution and brewers of the liquid gold; tours run daily at the brewery and yes of course the tour includes a flight of their finest ales and lagers right from the tap.
All around town are incredible galleries specialising in the carving of pounamu (New Zealand jade) into beautiful intricate and one of a kind pieces (it is Maori custom that jade not be purchased for oneself, instead it must be gifted lest you incur some fairly bad luck!). Sea fishing, fly fishing, and rafting and caving make up the balance of exciting things to do in Greymouth.
We recommend the 2 hour Point Elizabeth Walk that works its way through a stunning scenic reserve and the sites once dedicated to gold mining. The walk begins at Rapahoe Beach 12 kilometres (8 miles) north of Greymouth. Rapahoe Beach is also a very popular swimming spot during the hot summer months.
Māwhera
‘Māwhera’ is the Maori name for Greymouth, meaning ‘wide spread river mouth’. It is an alternative name for Greymouth.
