Motorhome Rental Picton
Picton – A Hub For Travellers Taking Their Motorhome South
Picton is situated in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds and is home to a great range of cafes, restaurants, and specialty stores. As the drop off point for the Interislander, Picton is the gateway to the South Island for motorhome clients and an exceptional town to explore as you make your way South. We recommend spending some extra time at the top of the South Island before heading south in your campervan hire to the likes of the Garden City Christchurch and stunning student town of Dunedin.
Picton has a number of incredible tours on offer from whale watching, fishing and cruising to hiking and wilderness exploration. The town is situated deep within a sheltered harbour and features a number of water front bars, cafes and restaurants. In Picton there is also a floating maritime museum and aquarium.
The Queen Charlotte Track
The Queen Charlotte Track is 70 kilometres long (approximately 44 miles) from Ship Cove to Anakiwa and takes approximately 5 days to complete. Take your NZ Motorhome Rentals hire campervan to any of the many entrances to the track (we recommend a guided walk providing you the freedom to leave your rented campervan at the entrance, transportation of your pack between huts and a stress free hike).
Between March and November of each the Queen Charlotte Track is open to mountain bikers – hire campervans can be fitted with bike racks to accommodate your preference. The terrain itself is generally undulating hills, however, the long distances can make the track challenging, a strong base level of fitness is required.
The Marlborough area enjoys a temperate climate all year round making it a popular destination for renting a motorhome and touring the country side as well as enjoying one of New Zealand’s most beautiful walks (for further information on alternative hiking options see New Zealand Great Walks).
‘Waitohi’
“Waitohi” is the Maori word for Picton. Waitohi consists of ‘wai’ or water and tohi – as in the tohi ritual, which a local tribe dipped karamu branches (a native NZ tree) in a local sacred stream – before brushing the shoulder of warriors before battle.
